Letters to Doris: Our Two Original Sunshine Scholars Share Their Gratitude

We are so grateful for all that our community partners do to help us better serve our community. One of those partners is the Red Sox Foundation.

Doris is a long-time supporter of the Red Sox Scholars program, which provides nine years of mentoring, enrichment activities, and educational scholarships to students from Boston Public Schools.  In 2016, Doris sat on the selection committee to help select the newest class of scholars.  She immediately recognized the potential of two young students who would benefit from the program, and decided to make a deeper investment by funding two additional students that year.  Anthony and Daniel became our very first Sunshine Scholars.

In 2017, we made a five-year commitment to funding two additional Sunshine Scholars each year to increase the annual Red Sox Scholars class from ten to twelve students.  In 2018, we were privileged to serve again on the selection committee, where we selected an additional four stellar students to join the newest class of the Red Sox Scholars.  Our now eight Sunshine Scholars are all continuing to thrive.  We are proud to collaborate with the Red Sox Foundation team to support our scholars, and thrilled to watch them grow!

Anthony and Daniel each wrote letters to Doris about the positive impact the Red Sox Scholars program continues to have on them:

Dear Ms. Buffett,

I would like to thank you once again for everything you have done for me…On the first year, I see many opportunities that can benefit me, but as months go by, I have gotten accustomed to how things work; it has gotten even better for me as I got into BLA [Boston Latin Academy].  BLA was a huge accomplishment for me.  The people of the Red Sox Foundation helped push and support me to get into such a well-known exam school. Because of your action towards me, it has made me strive for bigger goals in life.  As a final message, I would like to thank you for everything you have done.

Dear Ms. Buffett,

I am just writing to let you know that I am doing really good. I am in 10th grade and doing so good. Ready for school! Thanks for everything that you and your foundation [have] done for everyone, the Red Sox Foundation, and especially me! I just wanted to let you know how I am and I am very thankful for what you have done for me. Thank you so much!
